CREEK AT QUALSHAN

CREEK AT QUALSHAN
Named after Indian Chief and lies next to highway in valley below high drive. Good starting hole off a cliff...tough 2d and 12th holes. Interesting 16th hole over water and long par 5 18th over Hangman Creek..

DOWNRIVER

DOWNRIVER
Relatively short course but many interesting holes. We had our first home just 3 blocks from first tee and it became my "home" course. Located near the Spokane River...Watched Brett finish on 18 near the road and he shanked one o/b into some adjacent flowerbeds..coach not too happy.

ESMERALDA

ESMERALDA
Oldest course in Spokane. A relatively flat course, but most beautiful in the fall with the changing of the colors: Almost a hole in one on a par 4 (#13) while playing with John Quinlan in the Bar Tourney. Site of the church May golf Tourney led by Mac.

FAIRWAYS

FAIRWAYS
The flatest course in Spokane, but several interesting holes on back..#11 over water on par 5..Brett had a hole in one with Lance Ward, his dad, and I (8 iron) on #4…on the fly on the frozen greens December 27.

HANGMAN

HANGMAN
Course located along the south side of town along the Hangman Creek (occasionally floods). Played back and forth across the creek...long carry on # 3 and final hole to narrow fairway. #5 a downhill par 5 to a sunken green..Scenic par 3 over lake on #11 and a great par 5 on #16..easily a 3 shot hole.. Brett's "home" course in High School: watched him finish many rounds..he once tied Matt Bunn with 74 (Now a pro)...Brett had a jump in his step coming down 18!! Course survived a vicious fire in the 90’s that ravaged the entire South hillside. Some holes re-done on the back nine.

INDIAN CANYON

INDIAN CANYON
Outstanding hillside course in West Spokane, was once the site of the US Publix Golf Tourney. Played here in Regional Tourney in high school with other schools from inland NW. Very Tight fairways, but very interesting holes...tough to walk..especially nos 17 and 18. Once had a double eagle (albatross) on No. 1 (downhill par 5) with a drive and a 4 wood, followed by a birdie on #2..Playing with Frank Browne and Jim Conley.

LIBERTY LAKE

LIBERTY LAKE
Course east of Spokane and across the road from a newer course (Meadowwood). This older course was completely remodeled recently (over 1 and one half years)..Relatively flat but some very interesting up and down holes and several water holes including the 18th.

MANITO

MANITO
Private course which I belonged to for 20 years..Narrow fairways lined with pines..added water holes and 9 and 18..and a new clubhouse after bought land on west side of road and built a beautiful new clubhouse. Played many rounds of golf with Brett there and he played until and after the snow did fly (even got kicked off by Dan Porter for playing snow golf with Judd with tennis balls). Brett learned a lesson on temperment, when, after a warning and while 1 under at No. 13, he slammed his club to the ground and I walked in and he reluctantly followed. Had my only 69 here with a 30 foot birdie putt on the final hole of a best ball partnership with Bob Leeds (played against Dan Schoedel and his partner..quite fun. Later used as a clubhouse bridge hangout with some of the members. Could tell a million more stories from rounds at this course.

MEADOWWOOD

MEADOWWOOD
One of the newest additions to golf in Spokane and one of the best plays in the area. Rolling hills and a number of water holes on both sides. Very well maintained and now growing up with a number of trees. One of best finishing par 5's on 16..around corner and up the hill to a tri-level green..No. 18 straight down hill but very narrow..many rounds ruined here. Brett’s best round ever with a 67 (birdies on 2, 7, 8, 10, 13, 17, bogey on 16).

PAINTED HILLS

PAINTED HILLS
9 hole course which is one of the first to open..very flat and recently went into bankruptcy and not sure of its future..Played with John Risse

SPOKANE C.C.

SPOKANE C.C.
One of two Country Clubs in town. Best course in town with the first 9 on the lower half of the course and then to upper level. Interesting par 5 16th dogleg right over the road (elevated tee), followed by a great par 3 downhill over water with a scenic flower-filled teebox. Club recently incurred a judgment from 4 women on discrimination which at this point caused the Club to go into bankruptcy. Brett: I remember an exhibition that I got to carry a scoreboard for with Jack Nicklaus and Greg Norman. Greg tees up drive on 14 on a pencil and drives over trees that are not normally driven over. Jack hits driver and a beautiful one-iron pin high on 16.

SUNDANCE

SUNDANCE
18 hole layout that is very narrow and many tiny trees line every fairway (including the one next to Paul Tikker's home. Very tiny greens. Played with Brett, Mac and others.

WANDERMERE

WANDERMERE
Fun course on the north side with revised holes. and right along the highway. In the middle is “hard hat hill” where three greens and three tees all converge.
